The Budapest Blogger Affair

There is a saying in the UK that you can’t have your cake and eat it. And there is a British blogeressa who seems to think that she can do both: go to Budapest at taxpayer’s expense, enjoy your stay there and then come home and blame the government for having paid everything.

But the complete story is so strange that you can hardly believe it: The Department for Communities and Local Government paid bloggers a trip to Budapest – according to a British Newspaper “several hundred … bloggers and representatives from central and local government”.

As far as the British taxpayer is concerned, it is not may business to complain – its is just interesting that they can give away GPP 300.000 just for some bloggers to have fun in Budapest, or, as a spokesmand said “to enhance local (British) e-democracy with key players” – whatever key they may play.

But I just wonder why all those British bloggers did not complain to through away the tax payers money. They all went to Budapest and had a lot of fun – obviously. So is it common in the UK to “invite” Bloggers for free to trips into five star hotels in Budapest? What is the idea behind it? And why did the bloggers agree? Last but to least: why did they hide their trips to Budapest so well?

Back to the Blogeressa: She seemed to have some pricks of conscience afterwards - but as all the others, she went with the crowds and enjoyed it. In her blog, she calls herself “naive” - but in my opinion, there are other words for people who act like this – but as English is not my first language, I prefer not to publish it.
